Corpus Christi Medical Center Opens New Inpatient Rehabilitation Program

In the past, Coastal Bend patients who needed hospital-based inpatient rehabilitation had few options locally or had to travel out of town.   Local residents now have a choice; HCA affiliated Corpus Christi Medical Center has opened a 15-bed Inpatient Rehabilitation Program at Doctors Regional Hospital.

“Corpus Christi Medical Center is committed to providing a higher level of medical care; the hospital-based Rehabilitation at Doctors Regional is an outstanding program that meets the needs of our patients and the community,” said Kathleen Rubano, Chief Nursing Officer.

The Inpatient Rehabilitation Program at Doctors Regional is focused exclusively on helping people regain quality of life following an injury, surgery or disease that impairs their ability to care for themselves.  The Program is available 24-hours-a-day for a variety of patients – people who suffer from complications from strokes, neurological disorders, amputations, bilateral joint replacements and other conditions.  Since the Rehabilitation Program is located within the hospital, patients have 24/7 access to all hospital services - nursing and physician care, telemetry, respiratory support, imaging, laboratory, dialysis, pharmacy, and nutrition.  Patients also have the benefit of being treated at CCMC’s Primary Designated Stroke and Chest Pain Center; many other rehabilitation facilities require transport for advanced care.

“Our goal is to provide exceptional care in a patient and family-centered environment,” noted Tammy Chopelas, Program Director of Inpatient Rehabilitation. “One of the most important members of the care team is family; we encourage family support and involvement throughout the rehabilitation process.”

A team of staff and specially trained medical professionals with significant experience in rehabilitation work closely with patients, helping them to return to maximum independence and resume their quality of life.  A full range of comprehensive rehabilitation services are available including:

  • Rehabilitation Nursing
  • Rehabilitation Medicine
  • Physical Therapy
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Speech-Language Therapy
  • Dietary Services
  • Social Services
  • Respiratory Care

Patients may be referred to the Inpatient Rehabilitation Program at Corpus Christi Medical Center by physicians, discharge planners, family, staff, case managers, social services professionals or third-party payors. In addition, patients must have a qualifying diagnosis that requires 24-hour nursing care, and have the need for a coordinated intensive therapy program that includes two or more skilled rehabilitation therapies.
