Minimally invasive high blood pressure treatment offered at Corpus Christi Medical Center

Corpus Christi Medical Center is now offering renal denervation (RDN), a newly FDA-approved minimally invasive vascular surgical procedure for certain patients with high blood pressure. This innovative treatment targets overactive nerves near the kidneys that contribute to hypertension, providing an additional option for patients whose blood pressure remains uncontrolled despite lifestyle changes and medication.

“High blood pressure is a significant problem for patients in Corpus Christi and around the world, said Dr. Travis Paul Taylor, interventional cardiologist at Corpus Christi Medical Center. “For people with hypertension, medication and lifestyle changes can help reduce blood pressure, but studies have shown that many people still don’t have control over their condition.”

At Corpus Christi Medical Center, this new RDN procedure is clinically proven to help reduce high blood pressure, which can lower serious health risks. After mild sedation, the doctor inserts a very thin tube into the artery leading to the kidney. The doctor then administers energy to calm the excessive activity of the nerves connected to the kidney. The tube is removed, leaving no implant behind.

"The new renal denervation procedure offered at Corpus Christi Medical Center, which is FDA-approved, can provide patients with a blood pressure reduction benefit and does not require a permanent implant," said David Irizarry, CEO of Corpus Christi Medical Center. "We are pleased to treat patients with this new procedure and look forward to advancing hypertension care by offering innovative solutions to the people of the South Texas region."

Hypertension (high blood pressure) is when the pressure in your blood vessels is too high (systolic BP 130/80 mmHg or higher). People with high blood pressure may not have symptoms. According to the World Health Organization, hypertension is a major cause of premature death worldwide. An estimated 1.28 billion adults aged 30-70 years have hypertension and 1 in 5 adults (21%) with hypertension have it under control.
