The Northwest Behavioral Health Center at Corpus Christi Medical Center provides an atmosphere of healing. The 17-bed unit is dedicated to maximizing both the mental and physical health of our senior patients. Many of the mental health needs of seniors are due to difficulties in coping with changes due to aging. These problems may be interpreted as symptoms of aging, when in reality they may be medical problems which are treatable.

The program provides 24-hour intensive inpatient treatment. Working together, the medical director, nurses, social workers and occupational therapists, family members, and consultants assist patients in achieving their optimal level of mental and physical health.

The Mental Health Team addresses the following problems experienced by seniors:

• Memory loss and confusion
• Grief issues; i.e., loss of spouse, friends, independence
• Anxiety/fear, i.e., living alone, falling
• Withdrawal from others
• Difficulty adjusting to a new living environment
• Thoughts of no longer wanting to live

The need for treatment must be determined by a licensed physician.
