According to the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery, bariatric surgery is not only the most effective and long lasting treatment for morbid obesity and many related conditions, but mounting evidence suggests it also may be among the most effective treatments for metabolic diseases and conditions, including type 2 diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and obstructive sleep apnea.
The health consequences of obesity include:
• Coronary heart disease
• Type 2 diabetes
• Cancers (endometrial, breast and colon)
• Hypertension (high blood pressure)
• Dyslipidemia
• Stroke
• Liver and gallbladder disease
• Sleep apnea and respiratory problems
• Osteoarthritis
• Gynecological problems (abnormal menses, infertility)
According to a landmark study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA)
In 2004, bariatric surgery patients showed improvements in the following metabolic conditions:
• Type 2 diabetes remission in 76.8% and significantly improved in 86% of patients
• Hypertension eliminated in 61.7% and significantly improved in 78.5% of patients
• High cholesterol reduced in more than 70% of patients
• Sleep apnea was eliminated in 85.7% of patients
Joint disease, asthma and infertility were also dramatically improved or resolved. The study showed that surgery patients lost between 62 and 75 percent of excess weight. In addition to significant weight loss and major improvement in obesity-related medical conditions, the benefits of weight loss surgery reported by patients include improved mobility and stamina, enhanced mood, Self-esteem, and quality of life.
Studies continue to show the health benefits of bariatric surgery in helping obsese patients. To learn more and read about recent reviews and studies, visit these websites -
