Corpus Christi Medical Center's Bayview Behavioral Hospital Partners with the Jason Foundation to Host a Youth Suicide Prevention Seminar at Calallen High School.
Calallen Independent School District administrators, teachers and staff gathered for a youth suicide seminar presented by Clark Flatt, President of the Jason Foundation, a national leader in youth suicide awareness and prevention programs. Mr. Flatt discussed suicide statistics, risks, and warning signs of students considering suicide with over 200 attendees.
“Calallen ISD is fully committed to educating and providing resources to all of our staff to prevent youth suicide. Our students are our future; in developing our young men and women, we must focus on their mental health in addition to physical health and academic success,” stated Arturo Almendarez, Superintendent of Calallen Independent School District.
It is important that families know the warning signs associated with suicide, suicide facts & statistics, and how to find help for at-risk youth. Four out of five teens who attempt suicide give clear warning signs.
Warning Signs of suicidal ideation include, but are not limited, to the following:
- Talking about suicide
- Making statements about feeling hopeless, helpless
- A deepening depression
- Preoccupation with death
- Taking unnecessary risks or exhibiting self-destructive behavior
- Out of character behavior
- A loss of interest in the things one cares about
- Visiting or calling people one cares about
- Making arrangements; setting one’s affairs in order
- Giving prized possessions away
“Suicide is one of the leading causes of preventable death in our nation. Education is the key to prevention. If we can save one life – together, we have made a difference,” concluded Clark Flatt, President of the Jason Foundation.
